Geographical identity/location
The largest upazila of Rajbari district is Pangsha. Pangsha thana is established in 1863. The real history of the designation of Pangsha is anonymous. Pangsha mouja is basically known as Narayanpur mouja. The area of Pangsha thana is about 251.37 square km. The river surrounded Pangsha is situated in 22o40 latitude to the South and 89 o19 longitude to the East. This inhabited place of Pangsha was under the subdivision of Kumarkhali including Pabna district till 1859.
The background of Pangsha upazila
Different opinions are to be found in the naming of Pangsha. Pangsha thana is established in 1863. It is easily assumed that this title has been introduced many days before. Two opinions are expressed regarding the naming of Pangsha in Bangladesh population census. A man named Panju Shah, a preacher of religion came to Pangsha from remote Arabia to preach religion. His companions were five spiritual persons. Their name has been inscribed in the history of Pangsha upazila. From Panju Shah it becomes Panju and from Panju it becomes Pan and Pan has been added with Sha. In this way the title of Pangsha has been given. Sheikh Muhammad Sobur Uddin eminent history writer of Pangsha supported this opinion. However Panju Shah, the follower of Lalon Shah was born at Horishpur, Soilakupa thana under Jhinaidha district in 1851. Matam Shah, the disciple of Panju Shah had too much spiritual power. It is known that Matam Shah had five hermitages in Pangsha. This matter was published in the book of Panju Shah by Bangla Academy. Here we find difference of opinion about Panju Shah. Finally it is not relevant that the name of Pangsha comes from Panju Shah. Because he was born in 1851 and Pangsha thana was established in 1863. It is estimated that the name of Pangsha was entitled many days before Panju Shah’s arrival. Moreover, we don’t find any that relics that Panju Shah came from distant Arabia to preach Islam here in the sixteen century. In the sixteen century the spiritual personality Hazrat Shajui (R) came to Pangsha to preach islam.. He arrived from Afganistan. His majar was established in Pangsha. From this discussion it is vividly manifested that the spiritual devotee Panju Shah became very familiar with the five hermitages of Matam Shah. In this respect it is not reasonable that the title of Pangsha named after Panju Shah. Many people presumed that the name of Pangsha has come from Pansi (covering big boat). The river Chandana flowing beside Pangsha was very spacious and speedy river once upon a time. Many Pansi boats were congregated on the bank of Chandana. Pangsha was named from this Pansi boat. The usage and huge assembling of Pansi boat is also known in the autobiography of Mir Mosarrof Hossain. No historical evidence is to be found regarding the name of Pangsha in the love affair of sawtal daughter Pansi in ‘Dhaka Soronika-1982’ published by professor Abdur Rob Mia. People don’t believe this hearing. In the river Padma and Chandana there were lot of Pangas fishes. Many believe Pangsha has been entitled by these fishes. But there is no logic in it. From the discussion we can say that Pangsha has been named after Pansi and it is absolutely logical. It is also reported that after the downfall of Nowab Siraj-ud-Dowla the captive members of Nowab family were taken to Zinjira by Pansi boat via Pangsha. In the Mughal regime people moved to with Delhi through Pansi boat. The Ferry Fund road which was built during Nowab Sahesta Khan’s was expanded to Pangsha. Through this road, Pangsha, Nasrot Shahi, Mahimahi, Belgachi, Noldi and Birahim were included to this subdivision.
